In order to provide an image processing device and an image processing method capable of performing region expansion in order to extract a region, at the boundary between different substances where pixel values change nonuniformly and continuously, from volume data with good precision and of preparing a more accurate analysis image using the information for the expanded region, the CPU of the image processing device: acquires volume data on a region comprising the colon; and sets multiple region expansion starting points in a boundary region between air and residue in the colon while also setting conditions for the respective expandable range, the width of which corresponds to the pixel value gradient, on each starting point. The CPU performs region expansion from each starting point according to the set conditions. As a result, boundary regions are extracted without leakage even in regions in which the pixel difference from the surroundings is small. The CPU generates an analysis image on the basis of the information for the boundary region thus obtained. |
