The protector is held at a distance above the wound by elastic pads, which rest on uninjured areas at either side; the pads are elastic enough both to conform to the shape of the part they rest on, and to allow the patient normal physical movement, despite presence of the stiffish protector. This principle is worked out in considerable variety and great detail. As well as versions for general use, there are special versions of the dressing for the hand, the foot and the leg bending at the knee. Typically the dressing consists of a set of parallel rods fitting into grooves in soft foam pads which are held in place with sticking plaster, but there are many variants.
|
