PURPOSE:To make it unnecessary to perform a drilling work of an optical fiber base material by forming a core part on the inside peripheral surface of a quartz pipe, melting and removing its core part by leaving a part of the peripheral direction, and also forming a clad part on its inside peripheral surface. CONSTITUTION:A core part 2 is formed on the inside peripheral surface of a quartz pipe 1. Subsequently, hydrofluoric acid is put into a hole in the core part 2, and the core part 2 is melted and removed by leaving a part of the peripheral direction. The left core part 2 is continued in the longitudinal direction. Next, a clad part 3 is formed on the inside peripheral surface of this pipe. When the clad part 3 is formed, a hole 4 is made therein. That which has been made in this way is a base material for forming an optical fiber. When this base material is heated and drawn by adjusting an air pressure in the hole 4 so as not to break the hole 4, the optical fiber can be obtained. |
