The folded airbag (11) is positioned over a housing (22) which is resistant to the thermal stresses from the gas generator and with apertures (29) through which the gas expands. The gas generator has a reservoir (26) which can be refilled after use allowing the airbag to be refolded over the housing. The housing can be made of pressed stainless steel and is not deformed by the thermal stresses from the gas generator. The propellant for the gas generator can be a fluid, or two fluids which produce an exothermic reaction on mixing. Alternately the propellant can be in tablet form loaded into the generator via a removable cover. The gas generator is activated electrically.
