A sewing machine has a holder (20) for a fabric (26). The holder (20) has a drive (18) to move it over the support plate (14) in a stepwise motion relative to the upper part (16) of the sewing machine. The holder (20) is pressed against a support plate (14) and the pressure needed to produce the required friction does not derive from the drive (18) but is produced by an adjustable sub-atmospheric pressure against the support plate (14).
