The method involves determining the energy state arising for each switching process in the electromagnetic actuator by detecting the varying armature position and/or speed. An extrapolation estimate is made of the anticipated energy state when the armature (1) is incident upon the pole face and a rough correction graph is formed by comparing the extrapolation estimate with a predefined target value selected using the total energy stored in the system in the second switch position.
