PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform uniform and proper lighting irrelevantly to the background of an object. SOLUTION: The microcomputer of an electronic still camera corrects a dimming level by preliminary lighting in step S21 and determines whether the effect of the strobe lighting is obtained in step S22. When the effect is obtained, main lighting is started in step S23. In step S24, the light reflected by the object is photoelectrically converted and digitized. In step S25, an optical sensor output is integrated. In step S26, a comparator compares the integral value of the optical sensor output with the corrected dimming level. Consequently, when the integral value reaches the dimming level, the electronic flash lighting is stopped in step S27. When not, on the other hand, a return to step S24 is made. If the effect of the electronic flash lighting is not obtained in step S22, the main lighting is stopped in step S28. |
