PRODUCTION OF GLASS FIBER

PURPOSE:To produce glass fibers having a deformed cross-section by spinning molten glass into molten filaments through nozzle holes having a special noncircular cross-section and by rapidly cooling the filaments. CONSTITUTION:Molten glass 7 is spun into molten filaments under ordinary or elevated pressure through a nozzle plate 2 provided with nozzle holes having a noncircular cross-section. The ratio between the maximum and minimum sizes of the cross-section is (1.5-6):1. The molten filaments are rapidly cooled by blowing cooling gas by 0.05-3l/min from the blowing pipes 15 of a cold air blower 14 placed at 75-85 deg. angle to the nozzle plate 2. A bundling agent is stuck to the resulting filaments with a roll 3, the filaments are bundled with rolls 4 to form a strand 10 and this strand 10 is coiled around the coiling pipe 11 of a coiler 5.
