This invention concerns a process for cleaning wastewater and recirculating water in paper production, de-inking and bleaching of pulp. This process involves adsorption of water-soluble anionic compounds and compounds dispersed in water from the wastewater and recirculating water onto fine-particle adsorption agents consisting of insoluble polymers which swell to a very limited extent and contain vinylamine units which have been incorporated by polymerization. This invention further concerns the use of these polymers as adsorption agents for cleaning water recirculation systems in the production of paper and for cleaning paper machine wastewater and discharge from the de-inking process and from pulp bleaching.
