Mono and di-derivatives of cyclodextrins, their synthesis and purification and their use as carrier

Preparation of monosubstituted cyclodextrins of formula (X) and disubstituted cyclodextrins of formula (XI) comprises reacting a natural cyclodextrin, with 1-24 moles per mole of the cyclodextrin, with a vinyl compound of formula (II) T-R4-CH=CH2 (II) T = halo, tosyl or mesyl; R4 = 1-20C alkyl or aryl (optionally substituted by 1-20C alkyl); CDy = monovalent alpha , beta , or gamma cyclodextrin group; and CDz = divalent alpha , beta , or gamma cyclodextrin group. Also claimed are: (i) pure forms of (XI); (ii) silica supports grafted with (X) or (XI) in which the cyclodextrin is linked through a thioether group; (iii) homopolymers and copolymers formed from at least one (X) or (XI); and (iv) supports carrying the above homo- or copolymers.
