A micro probe (7) touches the inner surface of a piston ring placed into a section of a test socket (31) to determine the profile of the piston ring which is subtracted from the internal profile of the test socket to determine a possible radial gap whose area is determined by relating a form filling ability, FV, with the ratio of the area, FS, of the cross-section of the gap to the reference area, FR. The test socket has a section on its inner surface having arched swellings having the same curve heights. A reference area is provided between a writable circuit and the swellings. An Independent claim is also included for a test socket.
