PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rare earth element oxide consisting substantially of spherical particles having an average particle size (Fisher diameter) Df measured with a Fisher sub-sieve sizer satisfying 0.7μm<Df<2.0μm and having the particle size De observed by an electron microscope satisfying 0.7μm<De<2.0μm. SOLUTION: By this method, monodispersion spherical rare earth basic carbonates having a uniform particle size ranging from 1.0 to 3.0μm which are conventionally difficult to manufacture, and monodispersion spherical rare earth oxides having a uniform particle size ranging from 0.7 to 2.0μm, and phosphors and ceramics using the oxides as part of or the whole source material can be obtained in a rather easy process.
