<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vehicle exterior monitoring system that can accurately recognize a pedestrian with a simple structure. <P>SOLUTION: In addition to a stereo camera 3 for imaging objects outside of a vehicle from different viewpoints, a far infrared sensor 4 is provided to detect the temperatures of objects outside of the vehicle in a search area covering the field area of the stereo camera 3 at least in a vehicle width direction. A stereo image processing part 6 executes three-dimensional recognition of solids based on an image pair stereoscopically picked up by the stereo camera 3 to extract a pedestrian candidate from the recognized solids. A pedestrian determination part 7 then determines whether the pedestrian candidate is an actual pedestrian or not according to the temperature detection value detected by the far infrared sensor 4 in the same direction as the pedestrian candidate. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
