The invention relates to a device for transmitting packets in a network comprising a packet-processing unit for preparing a packet transmission on an interface. The packet comprises an IP (ET-IPv4) header, in particular an IPv4 header and is provided with at least one source field (ASL) and destination field (ADL). A transmission is provided from an extended source address to an extended destination address, the extended addresses being longer than the destination fields. The extended destination address comprises an indication whether the destination is adapted or not for processing the packets containing the extended source and destination addresses and the processing unit is arranged in such a way that it recognises said indication in the extended destination address.
