The invention relates to a method for selection of an operating element of a motor vehicle by a user of the motor vehicle, in particular a driver of the motor vehicle, and to an operating system for a motor vehicle. The invention enables a simple and reliable operation of operating elements of the motor vehicle and at the same time necessitates reduced technical expenditure by comparison with the prior art. According to the invention an eye position of an eye of the user and a finger position of a finger of the user forming a pointing gesture are detected. A spatial axis formed by the eye position and by the finger position is determined. An operating element which can be identified by an intersection point of the spatial axis with an interior space of the motor vehicle is selected.
