The expansion joint in a road surface has a cover with a number of inbuilt girders, flush with the road surface and parallel to the joint. V- or W-shaped rubber sealing members (2) are provided for the intervening gap (S) between the I-shaped girders (1), with the underside of the head flange joining onto the web (13) at right angles. Bolts (4) through the head flange (11) secure hook-shaped clamping strips (3), with a thick portion (31) each, through which the bolts pass. At the rear they abut against the web, while each strip top surface bears against the flange underside. Its outer edge (32) fits round that of the sealing member, pressing it against the flange underside. The sealing members are so installed that their folding portion comes to lie below the level of the head flange. ADVANTAGE - Simple and low-cost design.
