The refrigerating machine comprises a closed refrigerating circuit with an evaporator (3), a compressor (5) and a condenser (2). A regulating valve (1), controlled by electronic regulators, is installed near an expansion valve. Regulation parameters of the medium to be cooled are compared with predetermined stipulated values (w) in a regulating appts (RR). The regulating valve is positioned according to the difference between the regulation amounts and the stipulated value. The position of the valve determines the coolant throughflow and hence the refrigerating level. At full load an optimum vaporisation is attained by monitoring the minimal difference (delta tw) between the suction gas and vaporisation temp. using a further regulator (DR). An automatic hot gas by-pass regulator (7) between the high pressure line and the evaporator prevents too great a drop of vaporisation pressure at partial load.
