The surface of a road or footway for a railway level crossing, is formed by metal grids (1) which fit between the rails (2). The grids are not supported directly on the sleepers, but by wedges (8,9) at their edges, fitted between the webs and heads of the rails. The height of each grid can thus be adjusted to bring it flush with the rails. The grids provide a non-slip surface and allow water to drain away, thus preventing the formation of ice. ADVANTAGE - All weather, anti-slip surface.
