An external device, such as a ring, especially an ear-ring for cattle, is formed from a matrix that includes 0.1-40 wt.% of a compound of formula (I). R1 = CN, Me or halo; R2 = S(O)nR3, 4,5-dicyano-imidazol-2-yl, or haloalkyl; R3 = alkyl or haloalkyl; R4 = H, halo, NR5R6, S(O)mR7, COR7, COOR7, alkyl, haloalkyl, OR8, or N=C(R9)(R10); R5, R6 = H, alkyl, haloalkyl, C(O)alkyl, alkoxycarbonyl or S(O)rCF3; or R5+R6 = a divalent alkylene that may be interrupted by 1 or 2 divalent heteroatoms, such as O or S; R7 = alkyl or haloalkyl; R8 = H, alkyl or haloalkyl; R9 = H or alkyl; R10 = phenyl or heteroaryl optionally substituted by one or more halo or OH, O-alkyl, S-alkyl, CN, or alkyl; R11, R12 = H, halo, CN or NO2; R13 = halo, haloalkyl, haloalkoxy, S(O)qCF3 or SF5; m, n, q, r = 0-2; and X = N or CR12; provided that when R1 = Me, either (1) R3 = haloalkyl, R4 = NH2, R11 = Cl, R13 = CF3, and X = N, or (2) R2 = 4,5-dicyano-imidazol-2-yl, R4 = Cl, R11 = Cl, R13 = CF3, and X = =CCl.
