An aluminothermal mixture for welding rails, comprises iron oxides and aluminium and also additives such as alloy formers and damping agents. The additives contain in weight % 0.1-16 silicon dioxide or 0.1-20 metallic silicate of formula: Me-Si-O or Me-Si-C-O in which Me is Fe, Mn, Cr, Al, Mg or Ca.
