A method for efficiently searching compounds capable of inhibiting steroid sulfatase activity and thus being useful in treating hormone-dependent diseases such as mammary cancer which comprises treating cells having a steroid sulfatase gene transferred thereinto with the compounds to be tested and then judging the proliferation of the cells.
