A reproduction control system comprises the steps of obtaining a data file, receiving an authorisation file containing encrypted data and determining if the data file can be reproduced. The data file may be an audio track, video presentation or a computer program. The authorisation file contains a digital signature derived from a unique identity code of the data file. The encryption may use a public/private key methodology. The authorisation file may include time criterion, user identity codes or location information. In use, the file identity code in the encrypted data is compared with the file identity code in the file and copying inhibited if they do not match. The file identity code may be embedded in the data file and derived from intrinsic characteristics of the file. In a second embodiment the authorisation file may be a reproduction command for a mass production system. The authorisation file may take the form of a signal carrying the digital signature. The system may be used as part of rights management for copyright material wherein orders are created for mass production. |
