The invention relates to a variable-ratio marine gear step (2) which can be installed between a drive motor and an output element (7) of a ship propulsion system. According to the invention the marine gear step has a first, rigidly translated power branch (4, 8, 9, 220) and a second power branch (4, 14, 18, 16, 22, 24, 26, 210, 9, 220) between a motor-side drive shaft (4) and an output shaft (6) on the side of the output element. A continuously variable gear step (14, 18, 16) is provided for in the second power branch. The second continuously variable gear step transmits only a small part of the total power and can therefore have correspondingly small dimensions. It can be configured as a bevel-gear continuously variable transmission (14, 18, 16), toroidal transmission, electrical generator-motor unit or hydrostatic transmission.
