PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gas switch with stable and good cut-off performance, particularly in a low-to-medium current range in which arc rotation is insuffi cient and arc-extinguishing capability is low. SOLUTION: This rotary arc type gas switch includes an annular arc runner 13 provided on the lower surface of a drive coil 12, a fixed contact 3 arranged near the underside of the outer peripheral part of the arc runner 13, and a movable contact 4 which moves towards and away from the front surface of a fixed contact 3, the movable contact 4 moving along the arc runner 13 immediately after separation, and stopping generally on the central axis of the arc runner 13 after complete separation. An arc generated between both contacts 3, 4 is commutated to the arc runner 13, and cutoff current is passed through the drive coil 12 to rotatingly drive the arc by means of the generated magnetic field of the drive coil 12, so as to extinguish the arc. A gas compression plate 24 which moves forward as the movable contact 4 moves to spray compressed gas to the fixed contact 3 is provided rearward of the fixed contact 3 and a spray hole 26, through which the compressed gas is circulated and sprayed to the arc is formed in the fixed contact 3.
