PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a transparentizing agent which is used for paper, has an excellent transparentizing property, does not give stickiness to the surface of transparentized paper, can easily be removed, and can well be recycled. SOLUTION: This transparentizing agent for paper comprises an aqueous polyether compound represented by the general formula [1]: R<1> O(AO)n R<2> [R<1> and R<2> are each independently H, a 1 to 22C hydrocarbon or an acyl; A is a 2 to 4C alkylene; (n) is the mole number of the added AO units] and having a melting point of >=40 deg.C or the reaction product of a polyisocyanate compound with the compound represented by the general formula [1] wherein at least one of R<1> and R<2> is H.
