The invention is for a polycrystalfine diamond composite material comprising intergrown diamond particles and a binder phase, the binder phase comprising a tin-based intermetallic or terna ry carbide compound formed with a metallic solvent/cat-alyst. The invention extends to a polycrystalline diamond abrasive compact comprisi ng such a composite material and to a tool insert comprising such a diamond abrasive compact.
