PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photoelectric sensor capable of executing stable detecting operation, regardless of the type of a head to be attached to and detached from a sensor body. SOLUTION: Photo-detecting signals (d) output from a photo-detecting means are sampled in a first section and the maximum value Ph and the minimum value Bh thereof, other than 0, are determined. Data with the maximum value Ph and the minimum value Bh as reference values are sampled during the next interval, and the average value thereof is determined. Amoun of changedetermined by the difference from the similarly determined average value during the next interval. On the basis of the change amount of a stable photo-detection signal level of which the change amount is small, light projected amount of a light projection means is corrected.
