PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector that makes the reduction of the possibility of causing failure by light rays compatible with the comfortable video admiration, and is simple in configuration. SOLUTION: The projector 10 that projects video light based on an image signal onto a display surface includes: a light source device 11 that emits light; a housing 19 that houses at least the light source device 11; a projection lens 18, that is, an optical element that transmits the video light projected onto the display surface and emits the video light toward the outside of the housing 19; and a detecting part 25 that detects detection light supplied to the optical element. A light amount of the video light is adjusted on the basis of results of the detection by the detecting part 25 when the light amount density of the video light is equal to or lower than a predetermined value on an emission surface for emitting the video light of the optical element.
