A method for preparing an active herbicidal compound comprising one or more compounds of general formula (1) and/or its precursor(s) of general formula (6) wherein R is an alkyl or alkenyl group having 12 to 18 carbon atoms, and having 0, 1, 2, or 3 unsaturations; wherein R′ is an alkyl group having from 1 to 5 carbon atoms; and wherein R″ is hydrogen or an alkyl having from 1 to 5 carbon atoms, said method comprising the steps of: a) starting from at least one compound of general formula (2) in purified form as extract b) alkylating the at least one compound of step a); c) oxidising the at least one compound obtained in step b); d) Thiele (Thiele-Winter) acetoxylating the at least one compound obtained in step c); and e) deacetylating the at least one compound obtained in step d).
