The present invention provides a lubricant composition comprising a lubricating oil and, as a multifunctional additive, at least one compound of formula (I) <CHEM> in which R<1> and R<2> are, independently, hydrogen or C1-C20 alkyl and R<3> is hydrogen, C1-C20 alkyl or a group of the formula R<4> @CH-CO2H wherein R<4> is H or C1-C20 alkyl. Most of the compounds of formula I are new.
