A cake containing sulfur and other materials in a base solvent (12), such as that resulting from a liquid redox hydrogen sulfide removal process, is purified to obtain elemental sulfur by preferential solubilization of the sulfur (10), employing a selected solvent (14) immiscible with the base solvent at an elevated temperature less than that required to produce a phase change. The selected solvent (14) is organic and includes a water immiscible solvent and a water miscible solvent. The base and selected solvents are then separated (20), and the temperature of the sulfur solvent is lowered to recrystallize elemental sulfur (40).
|
