Biodegradable polyesters and polycarbonates of polyols, of formula R2O((ZCOOCH2CHYO)x(ZCOOCH2CHR1)(1-x)mH (I) are new. In (I) R1 = H, alkyl, 1-(2-pyrrolidonyl)alkoxymethyl or 1-(2-pyrrolidonyl)alkyl; R2 = H, alkyl, or aryl; Z = COR3 or a bond; R3 = alkanediyl, arylalkanediyl, or arylene; Y = CH2Y'; Y' = glyceryl, pentitolyl, or heptitolyl; X is between 0 and 1; and m is less than 500.
