PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound having high purity with a simple process in high yield by using 2,5-xylenol or 2,3,5-trimethylphenol as a raw material. SOLUTION: The objective compound of the formula (R is H or methyl) is produced by reacting (A) 2,5-xylenol or 2,3,5-trimethylphenol) with (B) formaldehyde at a molar ratio of 1:(0.1-0.5) in the presence of 0.1-0.4 times mol (based on the component A) of a basic catalyst (preferably sodium hydroxide, etc.) and 5-20 times weight (based on the catalyst) of water at 55-80 deg.C. The compound is e.g. 4,4'-methylenebis (2,5-dimethylphenol). |
