PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To profitably produce the subject aryl ester especially useful as a lubricant for diesel engines and methanol engines or as an additive for fuel oils in a good yield. SOLUTION: A hydroxyaromatic carboxylic acid alkyl ester is alkylated with an olefin in the presence of an acidic catalyst, and the produced alkyl- substituted hydroxyaromatic carboxylic acid alkyl ester is subjected to a transesterification reaction with a hydroxyaromatic compound to produce the alkyl-substituted hydroxyaromatic carboxylic acid aryl ester.
