<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound useful as a raw material for UV absorbers, cosmetic subscreens, etc., in the presence of an inexpensive catalyst under the generation of reduced amounts of by-products without requiring a special installation by reacting a specific hydroxybenzene compound with a chloroformic ester in the presence of an acid catalyst. SOLUTION: (A) A compound of formula I [R<1> is a (halogen or lower alkoxy- substituted) lower alkyl, a (halogen or lower alkoxy-substituted) lower alkoxy, a halogen; (m) is 1-5; especially 1,2; (n) is 0-4, especially 0, 1; (m)+(n)<=5] is reacted with (B) a compound of the formula: ClCOOR<2> (R<2> is a lower alkyl) in the presence of (C) an acid catalyst such as a Lewis acid to produce the compound of formula II. The component B is preferably used in an amount of 0.8-5 moles based on the component A, and the component C is used in an amount of 1-5 moles based on the component B.</p> |
