The device has a bag retention unit with stops (36) disposed in front of bags (30) and connected to a looping unit (38). The retention unit has stops (40) disposed at the rear side of the bags and connected to a looping unit (42). An adjusting unit adjusts a phase shift between the units (38, 42) to adjust the position of the stops with respect to pace imposed by a bag filling machine in which the device is integrated.
