PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject polymer having functional groups which are easily introduced into the main chain of the polymer in a large amount and effective for catching heavy metal ions, in addition to carboxylic groups directly bonding to the main chain of the polymer, capable of exhibiting an iron ion deposition-inhibiting ability, a clay-dispersing ability, etc., and useful for a fiber- treating agent, etc. SOLUTION: This water-soluble polymer has structural units expressed by formulae I or/and II R1 is H or methyl; R2 is H, methyl or the like; R3 and R6 are each a group of formula III [(l) is 2-6] or the like; R4 is a group of formula IV [M is H or alkali (alkaline earth) metal] or the like; H is NH or NR5 (R5 is CH3, CH2CH3 or the like)} and a weight-average molecular weight of 500-100,000. The polymer preferably has a iron ion deposition-inhibiting ability of >=70%, a clay-dispersing ability of >=60%, and an ability for stabilizing hydrogen peroxide against copper ion of >=50%. The polymer can be obtained by utilizing a corresponding amide compound (preferably, a compound of formula V or the like) for Michael addition polymerization. |
