The tool handling system has a tool magazine at the side of the work area for storing several tools. The magazine is formed as a magazine shelf (13) with several tool holders (17) set side by side and superposed. The tool change device has a transport mechanism (11, 20) which during the machining process automatically transports the tools between the holders and a pick-up position directly adjoining the work area.
