PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To erase data from a recording medium like a disk, to recognize the recording state of a data area of the recording medium. SOLUTION: Data on the inner peripheral side of a prescribed place in the data area of a data rewritable recording medium 23 like a disk is erased, and data on the outer peripheral side of the prescribed place is erased, and finally, data in the prescribed place is erased to erase data overall the recording medium, and the recording state of the data area of the recording medium 23 is recognized in accordance with whether or not data can be detected from a first data area and a second data area which are formed in the data rewritable recording medium 23.
