<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a controller for a vehicle power transmission device for shifting gears while achieving excellent efficiency of power transmission and improving fuel economy even when response delay of the rotational speed of an engine to the opening of an accelerator occurs. <P>SOLUTION: When response delay of rotational speed of the engine to opening of the accelerator occurs (S5), a new shiftpoint is computed (S6) by taking the response delay into account based on, for example, rotational speed of the engine and amount of change of opening of the accelerator and is used instead of a conventional shiftpoint.
