PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a solid polymer electrolyte type fuel cell which has a high output current density and involves less deterioration with time, by enclosing the catalysts of a fuel electrode and air electrode with an ion exchange resin of fluorocarbon sulfonic acid type, and giving the fuel electrode a greater ion exchange capacity than the air electrode. SOLUTION: A fuel electrode is installed on one surface of a film-form solid polymer electrolyte while an air electrode installed on the other surface, and the catalysts of these electrodes are enclosed with an ion exchange resin of fluorocarbon sulfonic acid type (preferably of perfluorocarbon sulfon type) so that a gas diffusion type electrode is achieved. The ion exchange capacity of the ion exchange resin of the fuel cell is made greater by an amount of 0.01-1.5 milli-equivalent per gram dry resin than the ion exchange quantity of the ion exchange resin of the air cell. The ratio by weight of the catalyst in the gas diffusion electrode to the ion exchange resin should be 0.40-0.95 vs. 0.05-0.60. Thereby a fuel cell with solid polymer electrolyte is established, which has a high output density and involves less deterioration with time in the output characteristics. |
