The method involves using an image recording arrangement to produce signals corresponding to pixels, deriving colour values from the signals for each pixel and transforming the colour values into colour measurement amounts of a predetermined colour space. Differences from a nominal colour locality are determined for the actual colour locality of each pixel. A measure for the image quality is derived from at least one pixel, in which the colouring is adjustable using an adjustment arrangement (21). Control values for the adjustment arrangement are calculated from the colour differences, to achieve an extensive matching of the actual colour locality to the desired nominal colour locality. At least one predetermined reference picture with homogeneous coverage is used to provide the measures of the quality of the pixels, whereby the compensation control values are calculated and stored.
