Monitoring device for detecting presence of person on running board of refuse collection vehicle

The monitoring device detects a running board of a refuse collection vehicle on which a person has climbed. When a load of at least 200 N acts on the running board a first switch (1) is actuated. The device also has an electronic analysis device which uses motor management to act on the vehicle speed, reversing an operation of the loading mechanism and/or its hydraulics. The device has a second time controlled switch (8) which is controlled before the first switch (1) and stops the hydraulics/loading mechanism when there is no load on the running board within a predetermined time and no switch pulse is output from the first switch (1). The first switch is preferably an opto- or ultrasonic proximity switch and controls operation of a third switch (4). The latter causes the forward speed to be reduced, prevents reversing and switches off the loading mechanism. A test generator (6) is used to provide a fast test pulse of 5-50 ms to the first switch (1). This reacts to a pulse to the third switch (4) but does not actuate the switch contacts of the switch part (5). The second switch (8) is responsive only to slower pulses than those of the test generator. The latter controls a comparator circuit (3) which blocks the third switch when the first is not responsive to the test pulse.
