PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a penem compound exhibiting excellent in vivo availableness and useful as an oral antibiotic. SOLUTION: This compound is represented by formula I [R is a group of formula II or III; R1 is H or a 1-6C alkyl or R1 forms an o-phenylene together with R2; R2 and R3 a 1-6C alkyl, a 6-10C aryl or 7-11C aralkyl which may be substituted with one or more OH groups or the like; (n) is 1 or 2], preferably acetyloxymethyl(5R, 6S)-6-[(R)-1-hydroxyethyl]-2-(3-tetrahydrofuryl) methylpenem-3-carboxylate or the like. The compound of formula I is obtained by reacting, e.g. a compound of formula IV (R5 is H, an alkali metal or an amino residue) (e.g. sodium (5R, 6S)-6-[(R)-1-hydroxyethyl]-2-(3-tetrahydrofuryl) methylpenem-3-carboxylate) with a compound of the formula RX (X is a halogen) (e.g. acetyloxymethyl bromide). |
