PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type display apparatus in which a polarization converting element can be reliably cooled. SOLUTION: The optical system is housed in the exterior case, as well as a light guide 902 having an air sucking port formed in the position corresponding to the polarization converting element 920 is disposed in the case. Further, the external case has an air inlet port for cooling and is provided with an air passage where the cooling air from the air inlet port is passed through between the light guide 902 and the external case, introduced through the sucking port 909 of the light guide 902 into the inside of the light guide 902 and passed along at least either the entrance face or the exit face of the polarization converting element 920.
