PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vacuum cleaner for detecting the amount of dust in a dust-collecting container even if having uneven dust loading in the dust-collecting container. SOLUTION: The vacuum cleaner has an infrared sensor 20 having an optical axis at a preset upper limit position H of the dust collecting container 11, and includes rotary vanes 123a for rotating the dust collected in the dust collecting container 11. The infrared sensor 20 continuously or intermittently detects the intensity of light transmitting the upper limit position H of the dust collecting container 11 in a state that the dust in the dust collecting container 11 is rotated by rotating the rotary vanes 123a. Then, it is detected whether the dust collected in the dust collecting container 11 reaches the upper limit position H or not from a statistic of the intensity of light which is continuously or intermittently detected by the infrared sensor 20.
