PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To protect a screw shaft against fatigue failure applied with a load which causes the fatigue failure although not exceeding a mechanical strength on design, in an extruder or a kneader. SOLUTION: The load (torque T) applied on an input shaft part 5 is detected by a load detector 7 provided in the input shaft part 5 of the screw shaft 3, an overload condition is determined based on a load average value T<SB>a</SB>and a load amplitude value T<SB>w</SB>of the detected load, and an abnormality alarm 22 is issued and/or the rotation of the screw shaft 3 is stopped, when an overload continuing time t<SB>0</SB>of maintaining the overload condition exceeds a set time t<SB>s</SB>.
