1. A detecting device for detecting a surface potential of a photosensitive member, said detecting device comprising:
a first electrode adapted to be positioned with a space relative to a surface of the photosensitive member; a second electrode adapted to be positioned relative to the surface of the photosensitive member at a distance from said first electrode away from the surface; a third electrode electrically grounded and provided at a position remoter from said photosensitive member than said first electrode and said second electrode; a first detecting portion configured to detect induced charge in said first electrode; a second detecting portion configured to detect induced charge in said second electrode; and a calculating portion configured to calculate a surface potential of the photosensitive member on the basis of an output of said first detecting portion and an output of said second detecting portion.
