A bioscaffold made from an isolated cardiac fibroblast-derived 3-dimensional extracellular matrix (ECM) is disclosed. The bioscaffold can be used as an epicardial patch for the delivery of therapeutic cells into myocardial tissue. Methods of making the 3-dimensional extracellular matrix using cultured cardiac fibroblasts are also disclosed. |

1. A method for preparing a 3-dimensional cardiac extracellular matrix, comprising:
(a) isolating cardiac fibroblasts from cardiac tissue; (b) expanding the cardiac fibroblasts in culture for 1-7 passages; and (c) plating the expanded cardiac fibroblasts into a culture having a cell density of 100,000 to 500,000 cells per cm2, wherein the cardiac fibroblasts secrete a 3-dimensional cardiac extracellular matrix having a thickness of 20-500 μm that is attached to the surface on which the expanded cardiac fibroblasts are plated. |
