A method of receiving a call by recognizing a posture of a user in a portable terminal is provided. The method includes identifying whether a call reception event occurs, detecting a motion in which the user brings the portable terminal to an ear by using a posture detecting sensor, when the call reception event occurs, and connecting the call upon detecting the motion.

1. A portable terminal comprising:
a first sensor configured to sense motion; a second sensor configured to sense a proximity of the portable terminal to an object; and a controller configured to control to:
detect a call reception;detect a motion of the portable terminal via the first sensor in response to detecting the call reception;detect the proximity of the portable terminal to the object via the second sensor in response to detecting the motion of the portable terminal; andestablish a call connection in accordance with the call reception, wherein the call connection is established based on a determination that the detected motion substantially corresponds to a predetermined motion and a detected proximity value of the second sensor of the portable terminal to the object substantially corresponds to a predetermined proximity value.
